Steam Inventory Privacy: Public, Friends Only or Private?

Find Steam inventory privacy settings, understand what Public exposes and separate visibility from permission to trade a CS2, Rust or TF2 item.

THE KEY POINT

Inventory visibility controls who can see your items. Making an inventory Public does not remove a trade restriction or confirm a sale.

01

Open the privacy settings for the correct account

Start from your own Steam Community profile. Choose Edit Profile, then Privacy Settings. Valve documents Public, Friends Only and Private visibility, with separate controls for aspects of the profile. Changes on this page are saved automatically, so inspect the current values before choosing another one.

Use the Inventory control for item visibility. Do not assume that changing the overall profile setting answers the inventory question. Steam’s trading FAQ specifically identifies inventory privacy as the control over who can see your items.

Set Steam inventory visibility. Account: Open your own Steam profile.; Visibility: Review the Inventory privacy control.; Eligibility: Read the item restriction separately.

02

Choose the visibility your intended task requires

A Public inventory can be viewed by people outside your friends list. Decide whether that exposure suits your purpose before changing it. Read the marketplace’s own requirements rather than assuming every website needs every profile field to be public.

The setting concerns visibility. It does not authorize a person to move an item, disclose a Steam Guard code or approve a trade. Keep the receiving account and the contents of any later offer under separate review.

Item visible but not tradableRead the item’s own restriction; visibility cannot remove it.
Visible in Steam but absent on a websiteCheck that service’s supported game, item eligibility and error.

03

Recheck the result before changing more settings

Return to the intended website and refresh its inventory view once using its normal controls. Keep a note of the old setting, new setting and time. If the same error remains, that observation is more useful than repeatedly toggling unrelated privacy options.

If you choose to restore the previous visibility, use the same Steam privacy page. A website that cached an earlier response may need its own refresh or support check; Steam’s privacy page does not establish a universal refresh deadline.

BEFORE YOU CONTINUE

Quick checklist

  • Check the correct Steam account.
  • Change only the visibility relevant to the task.
  • Read tradability separately.
  • Keep the exact website error if it remains.
