Steam Market Locked After a Password Reset or New Device

Identify an account or device restriction, distinguish a password reset from a password change and check item restrictions separately before retrying a sale.

THE KEY POINT

Start with Steam's exact restriction notice. An account lock, a newly authorized device and a restricted item need different checks.

01

Save the notice before changing settings

Open the Community Market in your own account and read the reason displayed for the blocked action. Record the wording and any end date. Then list recent account changes: recovery, a new device, browser changes or authenticator changes.

Compare that record with the item details in Steam inventory. A restriction on one skin does not explain every account-level Market error. Keep the account notice and the item notice as two separate entries.

Account, device and item restrictions differ. Account notice: Read the reason and end date associated with the blocked Market action.; Device authorization: Check whether the notice concerns this browser or a newly authorized device.; Individual item: Read the skin's own trading or Market restriction in Steam inventory.

Keep these three notices separate. A restriction on one item does not establish the cause of an account-wide Market lock.

02

A password reset is a specific event

Steam distinguishes recovering a forgotten password from changing a known password in the client. Its restriction article assigns a five-day trade and Market restriction to a password reset, extended to 30 days when the account has been inactive for more than two months.

Use the event you actually completed in your support question. Saying only that you changed a password can hide the relevant distinction. If the displayed account notice differs from your expectation, send the notice and reset time rather than requesting another reset.

03

Check whether the restriction concerns this device

Steam also documents restrictions for newly authorized devices. Browser-cookie removal and a new browser can cause a device to be treated as new. The article describes an exception for accounts with a mobile authenticator established for at least seven days.

Before clearing cookies as troubleshooting, preserve the error and account context. Repeatedly changing browsers can make the timeline harder to follow. For a sale through another service, report the Steam notice instead of assuming that its support can remove Steam's restriction.

04

Keep the report tied to the blocked action

  • Name the action: listing, purchase or trade.
  • Keep the exact notice and end date.
  • Record relevant account changes once, in order.
  • Link the affected item or transaction without exposing private account details.

BEFORE YOU CONTINUE

Quick checklist

  • Exact account notice saved
