THE KEY POINT
Test the microphone in the operating system, in Steam Friends & Chat, and in the game separately. A pass in one place does not establish that all three use the same input.
01
Start with the physical and system input
Check the connection, hardware mute and selected recording device. Valve’s microphone guidance recommends distinguishing hardware from software and a universal problem from one confined to a situation. On Windows, the input level meter helps establish whether the selected device detects speech.
If the system receives nothing, test another available port or microphone before changing game settings. Note any adapter or intermediate device. Change one part at a time so that a successful result identifies a useful cause.
Explanatory diagram, not a screenshot. Test the microphone in the operating system, in Steam Friends & Chat, and in the game separately. A pass in one place does not establish that all three use the same input.
02
Run Steam’s own microphone test
Open Friends & Chat, then its settings gear and Voice. Valve documents Start Microphone Test there. Use headphones to avoid feedback, speak normally and check which input device is selected. Keep the result separate from what your teammates hear inside CS2.
For Steam voice quality, review input volume before the transmission threshold. Valve explains that audio below the threshold will not be transmitted. If words are cut off, compare a lower threshold; if background noise is sent, compare a higher one. Avoid changing gain, threshold and every processing option simultaneously.
03
If only the game fails, record the game branch
Open the game’s current voice controls and check the selected input, transmission method and bound talk key where those controls are present. This guide does not assume that the Steam Friends & Chat menu is the CS2 menu, or prescribe a console command without current documentation.
Compare whether the game’s own test detects speech and whether actual voice transmission works. Describe those as separate observations. A working local test with no teammate audio narrows the report but does not prove a single bug or universal fix.
| No system input level | Check connection, hardware mute, device and system permission. |
|---|---|
| System works; Steam test fails | Check the selected Steam input and its voice settings. |
| Steam test works; only CS2 fails | Record game input, talk binding, test result and game version. |
| Speech is clipped in Steam chat | Compare gain and threshold one setting at a time. |
04
Give support the test matrix
Include microphone model, operating system, connection type and the three test results. Note whether reconnecting a device changed the selected input. Redact unrelated chat and account details. Do not install an unknown audio utility or disable security merely because another player suggested it.
BEFORE YOU CONTINUE
Quick checklist
- Check the system recording device.
- Run the official Steam voice test.
- Test the game separately.
- Record one change and its result at a time.
