Steam Input controller layout: game actions or emulated keys?

A Steam Input layout can send native game actions or emulate keyboard, mouse and gamepad buttons. Identify which mapping you have before changing controls.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Read what the binding sends, not only the physical button you press. Native actions and emulated inputs can behave differently across games and menus.

01

Identify the output of a binding

Valve’s Steam Input documentation distinguishes native mode, where a game exposes actions such as Jump, from legacy bindings that emulate keyboard, mouse or gamepad inputs. A supported controller can use either kind of layout, depending on the game and configuration.

Open the intended game’s controller configuration in Steam and inspect one problem binding. Record the physical button and what it sends. “South face button → Jump” and “south face button → keyboard Space” may produce a similar result, but they are not the same integration.

STRIKEPOT / EXPLAINED

The same physical button can send different things

  1. Native action

    The game receives Jump.

  2. Keyboard emulation

The game receives a keyboard key.

  3. Gamepad emulation

The game receives a gamepad button.

Identify the output of a binding
Native actionA game-defined action such as Jump or Menu Select.
Keyboard/mouse emulationA key or mouse event the game must understand.
Gamepad emulationA gamepad input such as an XInput button.

02

Check whether the menu and gameplay use different sets

Valve documents action sets that can change with the game state. In its example, Menu Controls and Battle Controls have independent bindings. A button working in a menu therefore does not prove that the gameplay action uses the same mapping.

Record where the problem occurs: launcher, menu, gameplay or desktop. Compare the relevant action set rather than editing every occurrence of the button. Preserve the original layout before a change so you can return to it.

03

Avoid treating every controller as the same input path

Legacy mode can bind mouse, keyboard and gamepad output, and Valve warns that some games do not handle simultaneous mouse and gamepad assumptions well. Mixed prompts or unexpected control behavior can therefore need a layout-specific check rather than a game reinstall.

Valve also explains that an external remapping tool can present an emulated Xbox controller to Steam instead of the original controller. Record any remapping layer and the device Steam detects. Do not assume a different device label proves the physical controller is broken.

Record the context of one failed action

  1. Device

    Which controller and connection?

  2. Layout

    Which saved configuration?

  3. Action set

    Menu, gameplay or another state?

  4. Output

Native action, key, mouse or gamepad event?

Make one reversible comparison

Use one repeatable action in a low-stakes game area. Save the layout name and original binding, change only the relevant mapping or choose a known appropriate layout, then compare the same action. Restore the prior state if the result is worse.

For support, provide the controller model, connection, game, selected layout, native/emulated output and exact failing context. Use the binding’s actual output and active action set to describe the problem; older screenshots of the configurator may show different menus.

  1. Select the intended game and inspect its controller configuration.
  2. Record the original binding and active action set.
  3. Compare one documented mapping or suitable layout.
  4. Keep the result and restore the prior layout when needed.

BEFORE YOU CONTINUE

Quick checklist

  • Identify the binding’s output type.
  • Check the action set for the failing context.
  • Record external remapping tools and detected device.
  • Preserve the layout and compare one action at a time.
