THE QUICK ANSWER
A preset belongs to a class and stores a complete equipment choice. Preserve your working combination, select the intended preset and verify its items before testing it in game.
01
Start with the intended class
Valve’s loadout-preset announcement defines four complete loadouts for each class, including weapons and cosmetics. The official Wiki describes the loadout menu as the place to equip items and taunts for the nine classes.
Open the intended class’s loadout and inspect the selected preset before editing. A combination saved for one class is not evidence that another class’s preset was changed.

Keep a record of the combination you want to preserve
Before trying another setup, note the current preset and its equipment slots. A screenshot or short item list is enough to compare the working setup with a trial setup.
Select the preset you intend to edit, then review each changed slot. A preset is a saved equipment choice; it is not a separate delivery or a promise of another copy of an item.
- Choose the class whose loadout you want to change.
- Record its current selected preset and equipped items.
- Select the intended saved preset before editing its slots.
- Return to the selector and verify the intended combination.
03
Check selection separately from what is currently worn
If a selection appears correct but the live equipment has not changed, read the current game’s loadout or respawn notice before editing more presets. Record whether the issue affects the saved selection or its application during play.
Keep the test to one class and one item difference. That makes it possible to tell an incorrect saved combination from an unavailable item, a server restriction or a timing notice without overwriting several configurations.
Three equipment questions need different evidence
Wrong combination
Compare the chosen class and preset slots.
Selection not applied
Retain the current timing/restriction notice.
Item absent
Check the actual inventory and any delivery record.
This distinguishes configuration from item availability without inventing a loadout or performance advantage.

Use the actual current controls for any shortcut
Valve documents switching stored loadouts with a button, but this review did not confirm your current keyboard assignments. Check the control shown in your client rather than assuming F1–F4 are universal defaults.
For a problem report, retain class, selected preset, expected item, actual item and any notice. If an item is absent from the backpack itself, investigate that item first; changing presets does not trace a missing trade.
BEFORE YOU CONTINUE
Quick checklist
- Confirm the intended class.
- Record the working preset before editing.
- Verify all relevant equipment slots.
- Separate saved selection, application timing and missing inventory.
