TF2 Killstreak, Specialized and Professional: Check the Tier and Effects

Distinguish a Killstreak weapon from an unused Kit or Fabricator, compare sheen and Killstreaker details and separate a life streak from Strange lifetime counters.

THE KEY POINT

Read the tier and exact item type. A weapon with a Killstreak property, its unused Kit and a Fabricator are different purchases.

01

Identify what the listing actually sells

Start with the full name: is this the weapon, a Kit to apply to a weapon, or a Fabricator used to make a Kit? A shared weapon name does not make those listings equivalent. Keep the item type beside the tier when comparing offers.

The official TF2 wiki distinguishes these tools and the properties added by their tiers. Use that distinction before looking at the asking price. A tool's thumbnail is not evidence that you are buying a finished weapon with its properties already attached.

02

Read the three tiers as separate specifications

A basic Killstreak property adds the streak counter. Specialized also adds a colored weapon sheen. Professional adds an eye effect as well as the sheen. For the latter tiers, record the named sheen and, where present, the Killstreaker rather than treating every item in the tier as identical.

The streak counter resets on death. A Strange counter tracks a different property, and an item can carry both. Comparing two weapons therefore means matching quality, tier and effects independently.

TF2 Killstreak tiers: counter and effects. Basic Killstreak: Adds a streak counter that resets on death.; Specialized: Adds a weapon sheen as well as the streak counter. Match its named color.; Professional: Adds an eye effect and sheen. Match the named Killstreaker and sheen.

The tier describes Killstreak properties. Check weapon quality, item type and any Strange counters as separate attributes.

03

Check a Kit's intended weapon before applying it

Match the weapon specified by the Kit to your intended item. Keep any listing for a Fabricator separate, including its requirements. Buying the wrong tool is a different issue from receiving the wrong weapon in a trade.

At the final offer, inspect the actual item details again. If the description no longer matches your selection, stop before accepting and preserve both references. A similarly colored name or a price estimate cannot substitute for the properties displayed on the item.

04

Use matching properties for a price comparison

  • Match the weapon and item type first.
  • Record the Killstreak tier.
  • Compare named sheen and Killstreaker when applicable.
  • Check Strange quality and other modifiers separately.
  • Read the final trade and any relevant restrictions.
