CS2 Name Tags: Rename a Weapon and Remove a Custom Name

THE KEY POINT

An unused Name Tag and a weapon with a custom name are different items. Removing a name does not return a reusable tag.

01

Identify the object before comparing offers

Valve describes Name Tags as single-use tools for weapon nicknames. Once applied, a tag cannot be edited or recovered as an unused inventory tool. Inspect whether an offer sells the separate tool or a weapon that already has a custom name.

Apply or remove a CS2 Name Tag. Unused Name Tag: A separate single-use tool.; Applied name: The nickname belongs to the selected weapon.; Remove the name: The applied tool is not returned.

Three different item states
Unused Name TagA separate tool before application.
Named weaponThe weapon carrying a custom name.
Name removedThe tool does not return to inventory.

02

Preview the name before applying it

Check the displayed preview, spelling and selected weapon before confirming. Valve’s FAQ lists supported characters and says characters absent from the preview will not appear after application. The nameplate’s position on each weapon is fixed.

For a purchase, compare the weapon’s full variant, wear and other properties as well as its displayed nickname. A custom name alone is not a basis for assigning an extra resale value. Use the inspection guide to keep the comparison specific.

03

Remove a name through the weapon’s rename menu

Valve’s documented removal path is to select the weapon, open Rename and choose Remove Name. Read the confirmation before proceeding; removing the name does not refund the applied tool.

Save an item-detail image before changing a skin you are comparing or discussing with another buyer. That record explains which configuration you saw without relying on an old listing description.

04

Check the item’s status if a modification is unavailable

Steam’s CS2 Trade Protection rules temporarily prevent modification of protected items. If an action is unavailable on a recently received skin, read that notice separately from the Name Tag instructions. The protection guide explains the distinction between item protection and a delayed trade.
