THE QUICK ANSWER
Follow the evidence instructions for your actual purchase method. A public profile screenshot is not a substitute for the account’s payment or activation history.
01
Choose evidence tied to the account
Steam establishes ownership using payment information previously used on the account or retail product codes activated through it. Start with a method you actually used, then expand that method in Valve’s proof-of-ownership article.
Make an inventory of what you still possess: a payment-provider record, an original retail key card, a digital key delivery email or a Wallet-code receipt. Label each with the approximate purchase date. You do not need to publish this inventory; it helps you answer the official form accurately.

Use the fields for the purchase method
For a card purchase, Valve asks for the card type, registered name, billing address and last four card digits. It explicitly says not to provide the full card number. For PayPal, it asks for the account name, billing address and a screenshot of the Steam purchase including the invoice ID.
Retail and digital activation evidence have their own requirements. A physical key photo may need the support ticket number written on the original material; a digital code submission uses the original account page or delivery email with the activated code visible. Follow the current article for the method you choose.
| Card record | Use the requested billing fields and last four digits, never the full number. |
|---|---|
| PayPal purchase | Find the Steam transaction and its invoice ID. |
| Activation code | Use the original source and the method-specific evidence instructions. |
03
Keep ownership proof inside the verified case
These records can help someone claim account ownership, so do not post them in Community discussions or send them to a person in chat. Open help.steampowered.com yourself and attach the requested evidence to the recovery case.
Make a public troubleshooting image separately from a private ownership submission. Redact secrets in public evidence, while preserving fields explicitly requested by the genuine recovery form in the private copy. Applying the same redacted image to both purposes can remove the very evidence support needs.

Explain what is missing without inventing it
If you no longer have the old inbox or payment account, say which evidence is unavailable and list the original records you do have. Steam’s lost-account guidance says you can still contact recovery support even without the current email, password or phone number.
Use one timeline and your existing ticket reference when replying. No checklist can guarantee a successful ownership decision or a particular response time. The useful outcome here is a genuine record matched to Valve’s requested method, rather than a large collection of unrelated screenshots.
