THE QUICK ANSWER
Check whether the server supports Replay first. A key press cannot create server replay data that was never available, and a saved Replay is separate from a finished video.
01
Replay availability is a server capability
Steam’s TF2 Replay help starts by requiring a server that supports replays. It identifies a film icon beside compatible servers in the server browser.
Check the server and the message in your client before remapping keys. If Replay is unavailable on that server, a different F6 binding does not establish server-side recording support.

Save request
Keep the F6 or custom-binding response.
Downloaded entry
Confirm the saved life appears in Replays.
Editor or movie
Watch/Edit and rendering happen after an entry exists.

Request the life you want to preserve
The Steam instructions use F6 to save the current life and name the replay. The server overview explains that data is flagged for saving when the client makes that request; unrequested life data can be discarded.
Use the action assigned in your current client if you changed its binding. Keep the save or download response, and do not assume every earlier life or full match remains recoverable.
| No server support | Replay data may not be available for this session. |
|---|---|
| Save requested | Keep the request and download status. |
| Replay downloaded | Open that saved entry before diagnosing the editor. |
03
Open the saved Replay from the main menu
Valve’s Replay FAQ directs users to Replays, then a temporary entry and Watch/Edit. After it loads, Space opens the editor. The documented cameras include first person, third person and free camera.
A missing saved entry is a different issue from a Replay that opens but needs camera or trimming controls. Record which stage you reached and the exact error.
From game data to a movie
Replay-enabled session
The server supplies replay capability.
Life requested
The client flags the wanted life for saving.
Edited take
In/out points and camera choices define a segment.
Rendered movie
A separate video output is produced.
The sequence follows the official feature descriptions without promising recovery of unavailable footage.

A Replay, an edited take and a movie are separate outputs
Valve describes a take as an edited segment with in and out points, and rendering as making a movie. Saving a Replay therefore does not by itself create a finished shareable video.
For unavailable server data, ordinary video recording is a separate route and needs to have captured the event. The old Replay announcement’s upload integrations were not tested; no present YouTube upload workflow is promised.

Quick checklist
- Check the original server’s Replay support.
- Use the current save binding and retain its response.
- Separate download, saved entry and editor failures.
- Distinguish a Replay from an edited take or rendered movie.
