Rust building skins: hammer selection and container colours

Building-block appearances use the hammer’s tier selection. Shipping Container colour changes use the Spray Can and are a separate choice from selecting the building skin.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Facepunch documents cycling building skins with Q and E while hovering over a building tier. Shipping Container blocks have a separate Spray Can colour selector.

01

Identify the building tier and owned appearance

A building skin changes a building block’s appearance. Begin with the target block and its tier, then check the relevant owned building skin. A weapon-skin picker or a crafted tool recipe is the wrong place to diagnose that selection.

Keep the product name and tier together in any screenshot. A stone-tier appearance and a metal-tier appearance need their own compatible block context.

Skin and colour are separate controls

  1. Hammer tier menu

    Choose a compatible building-block appearance.

  2. Spray Can colour wheel

Change the Shipping Container block colour.

  3. New container blocks

The announcement says the last sprayed colour is remembered.

02

Use the hammer’s skin selection

Facepunch’s June 2023 hammer improvement documents Q and E for cycling building skins while hovering over the tier buttons. Those bindings can be configured in Options. Check your current controls if the keys do not cycle anything.

Inspect the selected appearance and action before applying it. A changed key binding can explain a missing selection more precisely than an assumption that the purchase was lost.

  1. Equip the hammer and target the intended building block.
  2. Open the hammer’s tier selection.
  3. Hover the relevant tier and use the configured skin-cycle controls.
  4. Check the displayed action and selected appearance before confirming.

03

Shipping Container colour is another setting

Facepunch’s Shipping Container announcement gives its blocks a separate colour selection through the Spray Can’s alternate action. It also says the last sprayed colour is used for new container blocks.

Changing a container colour is different from selecting the container building skin. If the wrong colour appears on new blocks, record the last selected colour before reporting the building entitlement as missing.

A building option is missing

  1. Wrong tier?

Match the owned appearance to the target tier.

  2. Cycle keys changed?

Read the configurable controls before retrying Q or E.

  3. Only colour differs?

Inspect the Shipping Container colour choice.

If the option remains absent

Save the owned product, target tier, configured cycling keys and the exact menu or error. Do not demolish a block or buy a second skin merely to diagnose its selector.

BEFORE YOU CONTINUE

Quick checklist

  • Match product and building tier.
  • Read the current hammer-cycle key bindings.
  • Keep container colour separate from building-skin selection.
  • Save the exact menu or blocked-action notice.

The developer’s readable announcement supports the hammer keys, configurable controls and Shipping Container colour behaviour. No building upgrade, skin application, colour change, entitlement or resource cost was tested. The article is dated 2023; current key bindings and client prompts control the user’s action.
