THE QUICK ANSWER
Record the client channel before a comparison. After changing it and restarting Steam, retest the same symptom without changing the game’s settings too.
01
Identify the software that is on a beta
Steam Client Beta provides Steam client features before release. A beta selected inside one game’s Properties concerns that game instead. Write down whether the issue is with Steam itself or with a particular game build before changing channels.
For an overlay, media-viewer or client startup problem, record the Steam client version and participation setting. For a server-version mismatch, identify the game branch separately. Switching both at once makes it harder to understand what affected the result.
Which beta control are you changing?
Steam client channel
Changes Steam client participation.
Game Properties beta
Changes one game’s selected branch.
SteamOS system channel
Uses the device’s System update control.

Find the desktop participation control
Valve documents Steam → Settings → Interface → Client Beta Participation on the desktop client. Steam Beta Update opts into the beta and prompts a restart. Its app-already-running troubleshooting names No beta chosen as the option for returning to the normal client.
Read the actual choices in your current client, preserve the selected value and close games before the restart. Choose the non-beta option when making the comparison, let Steam update if required, and check the channel again after restarting.
- Save the current client version, channel and repeatable symptom.
- Open Settings → Interface → Client Beta Participation.
- Select the intended beta or normal channel and complete the prompted restart.
- Repeat the same action and record whether the symptom changed.
03
Use the control for the interface you are using
Valve’s beta FAQ lists SteamOS under Settings → System → Beta Participation → System Update Channel. Big Picture has a Steam Client Update Channel in its System settings. These are not instructions to edit an individual game’s branch.
Use the path that matches the device and interface. Preserve the original setting and version so you can describe the comparison clearly. A SteamOS system channel can encompass more than the desktop client, so do not substitute a PC label without checking the device’s own control.

Retest
Repeat the same action.
Report
Keep both observed results.

Report the comparison without overclaiming
If the symptom disappears on the normal client, report both versions, the action and the difference. That suggests a client-channel interaction; it does not prove that every beta build has the same fault or that a particular feature will stay unchanged.
If the issue persists, continue from its own evidence: overlay settings, game process state, installation errors or another observed failure. Repeated channel switching without a controlled test adds downloads and restarts without a clearer diagnosis.
BEFORE YOU CONTINUE
Quick checklist
- Identify client beta versus game beta.
- Save the selected channel and version.
- Complete the prompted restart.
- Retest the same symptom once and record both results.
