Rust instruments: note controls, MIDI and Windows issues

Start with the instrument note bindings. MIDI input and native .mid playback are separate routes, and Facepunch documented a Windows MIDI compatibility issue in March 2026.

THE QUICK ANSWER

Use the configured instrument keys to check basic play first. Facepunch’s March 2026 Windows MIDI notice takes precedence over an old instruction to enable every MIDI option.

01

Check the instrument controls first

The Facepunch-hosted Instruments Wiki documents numpad note controls and Options > Controls > Instruments. Its default table maps Numpad 1–7 to C–B; modifier controls provide sharps and an octave change. Read your current bindings if you use a keyboard without a numpad.

Compare ordinary note input with the route that fails. If keyboard notes work but a hardware keyboard does not, describe that difference instead of treating the instrument item as missing.

STRIKEPOT / EXPLAINED

Three ways notes can reach an instrument

  1. Instrument key bindings

Configured keyboard input plays individual notes.

  2. External MIDI device

Hardware input depends on MIDI support and OS compatibility.

  3. Native .mid playback

A file supplies a saved sequence of note events.

Original input comparison; no external helper program is required by the cited native-file route.

02

Hardware MIDI has a current compatibility caveat

The older Instruments reference describes enabling MIDI input after equipping an instrument. Facepunch’s 5 March 2026 Shipshape post separately reports Windows MIDI interface incompatibility, accumulating virtual devices and degraded client performance.

That post recommends disabling midiconvar.enabled and global.processmidiinput for affected users on the latest Windows updates who previously used MIDI commands. It explicitly says this stops MIDI devices working with Rust. Preserve that context when reading an older enable-MIDI guide; the advice is about a known implementation issue, not instrument ownership.

03

A .mid file is a different input route

Facepunch added native .mid playback in February 2020. Its documented route puts the file in the game’s instruments directory and uses instruments.playrecording with the filename without its extension.

Use an actual MIDI file you intended to play. Renaming an audio recording to .mid does not convert it into musical note events. A cassette recording belongs with the separate Voice Props controls.

Keyboard works but MIDI does not

  1. Record the difference

Name the instrument and which input route works.

  2. Check Windows context

Read the March 2026 MIDI-interface notice.

  3. Check newer developer guidance

Do not assume an old enable-MIDI step resolves the reported compatibility issue.

A focused diagnosis map, not a claim that the documented issue affects every machine.

04

Include the input route and operating system

Save the instrument, keyboard or MIDI route, Windows version and exact behaviour. The sources reviewed did not establish that every affected Windows configuration has since been fixed. Check newer developer notes before re-enabling a disabled setup.

BEFORE YOU CONTINUE

Quick checklist

  • Check the current instrument key bindings.
  • Separate keyboard notes, a MIDI device and .mid playback.
  • Read the March 2026 Windows MIDI notice.
  • Include OS and input route in a report.

Official sources

Public game documentation and item descriptions reviewed on 26 October 2026 (America/Toronto). Community-maintained references are labelled where used.

The Instruments Wiki and developer articles were read directly. The Wiki is community-maintained and old; the March 2026 developer warning supplies the newer Windows context. Searches of later developer notes did not verify a universal fix. No instrument, MIDI device, command, file playback or OS setting was tested.
